QL Server DBA

This is a full-time position with Vanderbilt University for an experienced SQL Server DBA.

Position is responsible for SQL database administration, evaluating data integrity, and ensuring optimal performance of the database environment.

The responsibilities for this role include performance optimization, upgrades, configuration, replication and maintaining the infrastructure of the database systems. Additional skills with stored procedures, ETL, and exposure to SQL Server 2012 will be helpful.

Key skills include SQL Server (2008), SSIS, advanced SQL Server performance and tuning, experience with database recovery/backup and advanced QA/data integrity experience.





Job Summary

Top level ability to develop and manage the SQL Server database management system for enterprise, mission-critical databases for Vanderbilt University. Provides expert level support services for database creation, performance, monitoring, tuning and capacity planning. Designs and builds physical data structures. Recommends, develops, and enforces policies and procedures for maintaining the security and integrity of the database and ensures the database meets availability and disaster recovery requirements. Demonstrate database functional expertise mentoring, supporting and training other team members. Functions as lead on projects.






Develop and Implement Complex Enterprise-Wide Mission Critical Databases





Provide expert level technical recommendations and guidance on new database technology.


Consult with management defining technical requirements and service levels


Install and deploy a database that is fully operational adhering to the requirements and standards.


Configure front and back-end connectivity ensuring communication requirements are met and transactions are successful


Work with team on new environment definitions and provide support for different environments (changes, refreshing, cloning)


Develop and implement physical database design that meets business requirements, follows standards and performs efficiently.


Ensure database population methods are efficient, accurate, and complete.


Install and configure middle-tier software, third-party tools as required by the application.


Administer and Manage Database


Recommend and develop database new policies and standards, and improvements to internal management processes.


Monitor the database validating standards are followed.


Develop upgrade release plans. Coordinate and apply database software upgrades, fixes and patches in a timely manner, correctly, with minimal disruption.


Maintain physical organization of database objects ensuring the database performs optimally.


Develop and implement data distribution strategies (replication, propagation)


Monitor and analyze system performance and capacity data identifying potential problems before they occur.


Manage local and remote backup and recovery processes making certain requirements are met, they are complete and tested regularly


Manage physical resource requirements and enhancements ensuring business needs are met.


Plan and coordinate technology changes with other departments.


Provide advance level on-call 24x7 support


Perform Database Testing


Develop test plans and procedures


Perform tests and document results


Coordinate and perform end-to-end application testing with development teams.


Provide Data Assurance


Develop new security policies and tools to manage and enforce standards.


Perform tests and document results


Coordinate and perform end-to-end application testing with development teams.
